Graduate Students:
Dr. Demopoulos recognizes the significant need for more clinicians with expertise in diagnosing and treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In 2018 she started the UCSF Neurodevelopmental Assessment Program (NAP). The NAP accepts clinical psychology doctoral graduate students in the Bay Area for intensive training in autism diagnostics and neuropsychological assessment of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Our lab also supports mentored research projects and dissertation research for select graduate students.

Alec Gallo
Alex joined that lab as an international scholar with a particular interest in language, communication and cognitive neuroscience. Specifically, Alec is passionate about how children acquire language and the behavioral and brain mechanisms involved in the child-caregiver interaction that facilitate language development during childhood in both typically developing and autistic children. He has investigated the relationships between language development and brain maturation during middle childhood at the Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language. Currently, as a research assistant at the University of Konstanz, he started exploring the dynamics of human interaction and communication. Beyond the lab, Alec spends most of his time exploring the mountains, reading books, and playing chess.
Marian Simarro González
Marian joined the lab as an international scholar seeking mentored research with Dr. Demopoulos to pusue her interest in understanding communication differences in ASD. Her primary research interest lies at the intersection of language and communication, using computational and behavioural neuroscience – specifically she is passionate about research that can improve the lives of autistic people. Currently, she is investigating interleaved learning and familiarity effects in multi-speaker environments as a Research Assistant at the Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language. In September, she will join the Max Planck School of Cognition for her PhD. Outside of research, she is often busy exploring the outdoors, on foot or by bike, and taking pictures. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the clarinet, baking and reading a good book.

Yelena Markiv joined the lab as a clinical psychology Ph.D. student for training in autism diagnostics and neuropsychological assessment in 2021. When not in the lab, Yelena tries to take advantage of everything that the Bay Area has to offer. You can find her exploring nature, checking out new eateries, or visiting summer festivals.
Valerie Lam - Clinical Research Coordinator
Valerie Lam graduated from UC Berkeley as a Regents' and Chancellor's scholar with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and in Integrative Biology. Her interest in helping children with neurodevelopmental disorders began when she was a teacher for low income, first generation students and was further enhanced at the Stanford SPARK lab where she studied social and emotional learning in preschoolers. Valerie is also part of the Bishop Lab and plans on pursuing a Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience. You can find her in the dance studio or bouldering when she isn't spending time with her cat, Nyx.
