Currently Enrolling Studies

Our current study is called the UCSF Speech, Voice, and Communication Study. We are recruiting children ages 8-16 with an autism diagnosis or suspected diagnosis as well as children without autism. If you are interested in participating, please contact our Clinical Research Coordinator at [email protected].

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - Speech, Voice, and Communication Study

We are investigating the link between brain function, speech patterns, and cognitive profiles in children with and without ASD. To learn more, look at the UCSF Speech, Voice, and Communication Study or FAQ tabs.

Speaking and vocal expression are among the most affected areas in ASD, yet the mechanisms linking auditory processing, motor control, and communication remain poorly understood.

Participants ages 8–17, with fluent or developing spoken language, complete speech, voice, and developmental assessments along with noninvasive brain imaging (MRI and MEG). By comparing individuals with and without ASD, researchers aim to identify neural and sensorimotor markers of speech and voice control, improving understanding of the biological pathways underlying communication differences in autism.

Insights from this work will inform the development of future supports and interventions for individuals with neurodevelopmental speech and voice differences.
(Participants must have no metal in the body to take part in MRI or MEG.)
